A new poll found Republican incumbent Jason Miyares ahead of Democratic challenger Jay Jones in the race for attorney general. Miyares led Jones 45% to 42%, a change from previous polling that had Jones ahead in the race. In that race, 9% of respondents reported they remained undecided.

The poll, from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, was conducted between Oct. 6 and 14. It’s the first university poll to track support in the attorney general’s race in the wake of newly public texts from 2022 in which Jones wrote about a hypothetical scenario in which he said he would shoot the then-Republican Speaker of the House. Jones has since apologized for the texts, including at last week’s attorney general debate .
