In a landmark verdict, a jury in Utica, New York, convicted former correctional officer David Kingsley of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of inmate Robert Brooks.

The fatal incident, captured on body-worn cameras, also saw the acquittal of two other officers, Mathew Galliher and Nicholas Kieffer, sparking widespread calls for systemic reform within the state's correctional facilities.

Governor Kathy Hochul has pledged sweeping changes, including increased funding for oversight and the installation of surveillance equipment, following the public outcry and the exposure of longstanding issues within the prison system.
