Mass shootings spiked upward in 2020 — jumping 48% from the year prior — and have remained relatively high since. This year, however, the country is on track to return closer to pre-2020 numbers.
There are several different ways experts define mass shootings. The Get the Facts Data Team analyzed a decade of data from the Gun Violence Archive , provided by the Gun Violence Data Hub .
For this report, a "mass shooting" includes any shooting where at least four victims were injured or killed, excluding the shooter.
