Thousands of people have died in mass shootings across the U.S. in the past decade.

Mass shootings spiked upward in 2020 — jumping 48% from the year prior — and have remained relatively high since. This year, however, the country is on track to return closer to pre-2020 numbers.

There are several different ways experts define mass shootings. The Get the Facts Data Team analyzed a decade of data from the Gun Violence Archive , provided by the Gun Violence Data Hub .

For this report, a "mass shooting" includes any shooting where at least four victims were injured or killed, excluding the shooter.

So far this year, there have been 327 mass shootings as of Oct. 1. Those mass shootings have caused 283 deaths and 1,480 injuries.
