The Western Hockey League has announced its arrival in Chilliwack has been delayed by a year.
WHL officials reached out to Black Press Media on Tuesday (Oct. 21) and shared that the expansion franchise is now targeting a debut for the 2027-28 season – the franchise was originally slated to begin play in 2026-27.
Officials noted that a variety of factors led to the decision, but one of the biggest reasons for the delay was the lack of an owner. It was shared that one particular group is close to securing the franchise, but finalizing that deal is still several steps away. The ownership situation is not far enough along to ensure a smooth entrance for the 2026-27, which was cited as a reason for the delay.
