Upper Hunter Shire Council turned to the Department of Health, Disability and Aged Care for a cash injection to pay for upgrades to meet compliance for a complex and dementia care facility.

The 16-bed facility was flagged for closure last year after councillors were told in a confidential report that it was losing up to $1 million a year.
