At least 46 people were killed and several others injured when two buses collided head-on during an overtaking manoeuvre on a major highway in Uganda early on Wednesday, police said.

The crash happened just after midnight on the Kampala-Gulu highway in Kiryandongo district, in the north of the country. According to a police statement posted on X, the two buses “met head-on during the overtaking manoeuvres".

One of the drivers reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision, but instead triggered “a chain reaction" involving at least four other vehicles, including a truck and a land cruiser. Several of those vehicles overturned multiple times, police said.
