Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels it not fair to write off Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after India’s seven-wicket loss to Australia in the first ODI on Sunday. The defeat in Perth marked a tough return for the two stalwarts, who were back in action for the first time since lifting the Champions Trophy in March.
Both veterans, now focused solely on the 50-over format, struggled against Australia’s fiery pace attack, Rohit edging Josh Hazlewood for eight and Kohli falling for a duck to a sharp delivery from Mitchell Starc.
With the series moving to Adelaide on Thursday and Sydney on Saturday, Ponting said the duo’s class and experience remain invaluable, especially with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon.
However, Ponting is confident the pair will soon rediscover their touch.
