DeWitt, N.Y.- The former Tops Friendly Markets in DeWitt has a new owner.

The store closed April 25 after a 40-year run at the 4410 E. Genesee St. location.

Now vacant, the Tops has been sold to The Widewaters Group Inc. for $550,000, according to the Onondaga County Clerk’s office property sale records. The sale was recorded Sept. 29.

Tracy Lauer, a Widewaters Group leasing agent, confirmed the sale. Widewaters plans to develop the property but is still working on specific plans, she said.

One thing it won’t become is another grocery store, Lauer said. Tops put a deed restriction in the paperwork that says it can’t be used as a grocery store.

Lauer said the business is in a strategic location and so it’s attractive to a developer, she said.
