COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Two candidates vying to run on the Republican ticket to replace former South Carolina state Rep. RJ May are heading to a runoff.

John Lastinger and Brian Duncan will now head to a Nov. 4 runoff following Tuesday’s initial election. Lastinger tallied 596 votes (40.05%), while Duncan had 565 votes (37.97%). A runoff is being held because neither candidate received at least 50% of the vote.

The special election is being held to replace ex-SC Rep. RJ May, who resigned after being arrested on 10 counts of distributing child sex abuse materials. May later pleaded guilty to five of the charges in exchange for the other five being dropped.

The winner of the primary will face Democrat Chuck Hightower in the special election on Dec. 23. Hightower ran unopposed in the
