A Good Samaritan may have helped save the lives of several newborn puppies that were left abandoned along a walking trail in Maryland.
The Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) says the fragile litter was discovered early Saturday morning, Oct. 18, inside a cardboard box off Route 7 and Creswell Road near the Riverside Apartments in Belcamp.
When they were found, the temperature was in the low 50s when the passerby spotted the box — and the helpless puppies inside, eyes still closed and crying for warmth.
Without their mother, the pups were defenseless.
The Good Samaritan scooped them up and rushed to the Humane Society of Harford County, where staff immediately began warming and feeding them.
One team member even took the newborns home overnight to bottle-feed them every couple of hours.
By Sunday, an experienced foster volunteer had stepped in to continue around-the-clock care.
Despite their best efforts, one of the smallest puppies didn’t survive, but the remaining three are “stable and thriving,” officials said.
“Newborn puppies like these need their mother,” Amanda Hickman, executive director at HSHC, said. “We’re so grateful that someone found them when they did."
"Just a few more hours in the cold could have been tragic.”
Hickman added that abandonment is never the answer.
“If you find yourself with a litter you can’t care for, please call us," she continued. "We’re here to help, with no judgment and no shaming.”
The shelter also stressed the critical role of foster families in cases like this.
“Our foster volunteers open their homes — and their hearts — to animals who need extra time and care before they’re ready for adoption,” Hickman said. “We truly couldn’t do this work without them.”
Anyone interested in fostering or donating can contact the Humane Society of Harford County for more information.
