A Wisconsin congressman who has been calling for federal intervention into the Milwaukee County Transit System's fare evasion challenges has introduced legislation that would withhold federal funds from transit agencies with universal fare-free policies.

U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, a Republican who represents Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District, introduced the No Free Rides Act alongside Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pennsylvania), according to an Oct. 21 press release announcing the new bill.

The bill would prohibit local transit agencies with universal fare-free policies from receiving federal funds with exceptions for free or reduced fare policies for seniors, low-income riders, students, and other ridership groups.
