OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day in 2004, an Oscar-winning film debuted in theatres — with a Heartland connection.

Omaha native Alexander Payne directed and co-wrote “Sideways.” The film proved popular at award shows, including the 2005 Academy Awards.

The comedy-drama starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Eight years later, Payne filmed “Nebraska” in his home state . It earned six Oscar nominations.
