In a new initiative to help homeless Tulsans get back on their feet, the city bought the Tulsa County Juvenile Detention Center and will turn it into a low-barrier shelter.
"The old juvenile detention site is a location that's been utilized for low-barrier shelter in the past," said Emily Hall, senior adviser on the homeless to Mayor Nichols. "It is sitting vacant and has been for many years, and it presented a great opportunity to fulfill this commitment to the citizens of Tulsa."
The shelter would be able to hold 175 people on any given night and would provide resources for the homeless.
A low-barrier shelter means the city will be able to help more people.
