BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC. (WTOC) - Tuesday night, the Beaufort County School District voted to approve the purchase of weapons detection systems at six district high schools.

The vote happened after the school board’s executive session.

The $600,000 purchase is set to be funded by the remaining 2019 referendum proceeds and $425,000 of operation costs from 2025-2026 school year from the special projects fund.

Any grants awarded will be used to offset the cost of the project.

No details were revealed by the school board on what type of systems would be purchased. They said that this not a reaction to any specific threat, but called it a proactive step that needs to be taken in order to keep their students safe.
