WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Kansas Department for Children and Families says it has been told to delay the processing of November SNAP benefits until further notice. The delay would halt food assistance to 188,000 people in Kansas for November.

DCF received a memo from the USDA stating that November benefits will not be distributed if the government shutdown continues through next Monday, October 28. That’s the day DCF says it would typically start processing payments.

According to DCF, if Congress doesn’t pass a budget bill by next week, it would stop the distribution of $34.4 million in SNAP to Kansas.

DCF Secretary Laura Howard said the department could distribute SNAP funds to recipients within 72 hours of Congress refunding the government.
