CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — Some animals that used to live across West Virginia have gone extinct.

For mammals, the extinctions in West Virginia are due to overhunting. According to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, there are three extinct mammal species in the state. The last recorded bison was killed near Valley Head in 1825, and the last known gray wolf was hunted around 1900. Although there is no known end date, and there is some debate on whether or not they are actually extinct, the WVDNR also considers mountain lions extinct in the state because there is no evidence of them.

There are also some marine animals that have gone extinct in West Virginia, including the tubercled-blossom pearly mussel, which was officially declared extinct in 2023.
