Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa has strongly denied allegations regarding his involvement in the death of his son, Aakil Akhtar. Speaking to the media in Saharanpur, Mustafa revealed that his son had struggled with drug addiction for 18 years. He stated, "I used to lock him in the room for two to three days. Got him treated at several places." Mustafa expressed that the family has been in mourning since Akhtar's death but is prepared to confront the accusations.
On October 16, Mustafa found his son dead in his room, claiming that Akhtar had been consuming excessive drugs. He mentioned, "We knew allegations would be made, that’s why we got the post-mortem done." Mustafa, a former police chief, stated that he understands the investigation process and welcomes the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the case.
Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta confirmed that an FIR has been filed against Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, and other family members under sections related to murder and conspiracy. The FIR was based on a complaint from Shamshuddin, who alleged that Akhtar had posted a video on social media expressing fears that his family might harm him. In the video, Akhtar claimed, "Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or even killed."
Mustafa insisted that his son suffered from a long-term psychotic disorder and that the video was being misused to tarnish their family's reputation. He stated, "He often became violent due to his illness. In 2008, he even broke his mother’s hip, but we said she had fallen." He described the situation as a conspiracy against a high-profile family.
The investigation is ongoing, with the viscera report pending. Mustafa concluded, "The truth will come out. I have buried the father inside me." The SIT is expected to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akhtar's death.
