In the space of three months last year, mpox cases in Australia surged from a very low base.

More than 600 of 2024's total 1,409 recorded cases were confirmed during July to September, bringing mpox rates in the country to a new high.

But this year the number of confirmed cases of the virus has been considerably lower, according to public figures from the Department of Health.

As of October 22, there have been just 203 confirmed infections across the country, with Victoria and NSW recording the bulk of cases.

Mpox, which is from the same family as small pox, is spread by intimate or physical contact and can be transmitted through the skin, body fluids or contaminated materials like clothing.
