The trial of a Scarborough rapper accused of murdering two young women has commenced in Ontario. Christine Crooks, 18, from Toronto, and Juliana Pannunzio, 20, from Windsor, were shot dead on January 19, 2021, at an Airbnb in Fort Erie. The party, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, ended tragically with the discovery of Crooks' body in a bedroom and Pannunzio's body in a living room chair. Christopher “El Plaga” Lucas, 23, faces two counts of second-degree murder in connection with their deaths. Authorities found Lucas's DNA on a marijuana joint located near Crooks' body. It took nearly eight months for police to arrest him. The prosecutor noted, "Nearly five years later, not one of the partygoers there has identified the shooter." The relationships between Crooks, Pannunzio, and the other party attendees, including Lucas, remain unclear. Few witnesses have come forward with information about the events of that night. Crown attorney Jodi Ostapiw stated that Crooks had invited Pannunzio to the party, which was organized by Heidi Bahler for a man named Trevor Barnett. Bahler, who did not know either victim, and Barnett have both pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. Barnett allegedly encouraged other attendees to lie to police. Their lawyers claimed they were motivated by fear of retaliation or being implicated in the crime. During the party, attendees engaged in drinking games and appeared to be enjoying themselves. Bahler testified, "We played the game ‘Never Have I Ever’ and other drinking games. We all got along, and we were really enjoying our time, and we were laughing." However, around 3 a.m., gunshots rang out. Bahler later expressed uncertainty about the events leading to the shooting, stating, "I don’t know what led up to the events of this disgusting crime." Eighty minutes after the shooting, Bahler made a 911 call. During the nine-minute call, she took several minutes to mention the shooting, describing the sounds as "pops, like fireworks." She also noted that there were unfamiliar people at the party and that she had been outside when the shots were fired. "I just wanted to have a good time," she said. Months before the incident, Lucas had posted a video of himself holding a Glock firearm. By July 2021, police had focused their investigation on him, and he was arrested in August after failing to attend court for other legal issues. The trial is expected to last up to nine weeks as the prosecution and defense present their cases.
