NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — A report shows that New Mexico has the sixth-highest drug overdose death rate in the nation. Nearly a quarter of those deaths were caused by prescription drugs, according to the report. The New Mexico Department of Health is raising awareness on the issue through two upcoming events.

Thursday is "Lock your Meds Day." According to NMDOH, 45% of those who misuse prescription drugs get them from family or friends' unlocked medicine cabinets. In light of this, health officials are urging residents to lock their medicine cabinets.
