Several taxpayers in Rutherford County may be paying too much in taxes due to faulty home property assessments, according to the Tennessee Comptroller’s office, which said there are significant errors in the county's assessment process.

A similar issue happened for the city of Red Bank and has caused confusion over where the money will go.

Tennessee Comptroller Jason Mumpower addressed the Rutherford County Commission during the meeting on Thursday, saying property assessments that are done incorrectly shake the foundation of the tax system.

Mumpower said the problems were first noticed in 2023.
