Detroit — Family and colleagues on Wednesday remembered former U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick as fiercely devoted to her family, committed to fighting for Detroit and as a trailblazer for Black women in politics.

Cheeks Kilpatrick died Oct. 7 at age 80 after a long illness, family said. Members of the public paid their respects during a visitation at Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Warren Avenue earlier this week.
