MASSENA, New York (WWNY) - The Massena Public Library needs a new heating system, and library leaders are hoping the community will pitch in to support the costly endeavor.

Year-round, you can find Robert Leroux at Massena Public Library, reading the paper, surfing the web, or catching up with friends.

“It’s almost like a community thing, you know? Somewhere to go and hang out,” he said.

And below Leroux, a 23-year-old steam boiler system helps keep the library open year-round when it gets cold in the winter.

“I didn’t know steam-powered things still existed,” said Krista Briggs, director, Massena Public Library.

While Briggs says it’s not urgent, its boiler is nearing the end of its life. Replacing it will cost $900,000.
