Lafayette, N.Y. - Three more Onondaga County school districts will add cameras to school buses to catch drivers who blow past stopped buses.

County Executive Ryan McMahon announced Wednesday that Lafayette, Tully and Onondaga Central will be included in round two of the county’s Bus Safety Initiative.

The districts join six others who started using the cameras this fall: Baldwinsville, Liverpool, North Syracuse, Jamesville-DeWitt, Fabius-Pompey and East Syracuse Minoa.

The county contracts with a private company, Vera Mobility, to install and monitor the cameras at zero charge. The company keeps 55% of the fines it collects, and the rest goes to the county.

The fine for a first offense is $250. A second violation within 18 months costs $275. A third violation costs $300.
