A new veterinarian at the Sarnia and District Humane Society is helping change how the animal shelter deals with feral cats.

The Exmouth Street shelter recently started a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program, treating, vaccinating and releasing strays brought to the shelter back where they were found, said Tracy Satchell.

“It is easy to say we’re going to help over 100 cats a year through this program,” who would otherwise be euthanized – a common practice for feral cats in North America, she said.

“Now we’re kind of changing and adopting a more humane model that can help save the lives of these cats, and also serve the community at the same time.”
