Sellers are noticeably scarce on Manhattan's Canal Street a day after a mass of federal agents questioned street vendors and sparked spontaneous protests on Manhattan’s Canal Street.
But some who have ventured out Wednesday are disheartened or riled by the sweep Tuesday. They say people including U.S. citizens were pressed to show their papers.
Federal authorities say 9 men who were illegally in the U.S. were arrested.
The Department of Homeland Security calls the sweep “a targeted, intelligence-driven” operation focused on sales of counterfeit goods on the commercial strip.
But some vendors see it as an indiscriminate and heavy-handed crackdown.
