STATEWIDE -- The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is expanding a 'do not eat' advisory for hunters in parts of Waldo and Somerset counties.
Updated guidelines released Wednesday urge hunters in portions of central Maine not to eat any white tailed deer or wild turkey due to PFAS contamination in animal muscle tissue. Experts say wildlife feeding in contaminated areas have ingested these chemicals and now have PFAS in their meat and organs.
According to MDIFW Communication Director Mark Latti , PFAS persists in the environment in soil, water, plants and animals. Exposure to these chemicals can increase risk of cancer and harm cholesterol levels, among other health impacts.
The youth deer hunt opens this weekend and resident only day will be Saturday No
