HAWTHORNE TOWNSHIP — The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has released the names of the two drivers killed in a wrong-way, head-on crash on U.S. Highway 53 south of Superior on Wednesday afternoon. Duluth residents Todd M. Eckart, 61, and Daniel W. Ohara, 77, died at the scene.
Eckart was a locally well-known singer, songwriter and musician.
Ohara drove a Subaru Forester northbound in the southbound left lane and collided with a southbound Dodge Caravan driven by Eckart, according to witness statements collected by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The head-on crash was reported at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to a sheriff's office news release. Emergency responders arrived on scene and found both vehicles with heavy front-end damage, one on each side of the road. Ohara and Eckart
