Basketball’s back, and the VIU Mariners teams were ready for tipoff.
Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams started the Pacific Western Athletic Association season on the road against the Okanagan Coyotes this past weekend, and went a perfect four-for-four.
The Mariners men won the season opener 112-72, then followed up with a 100-66 victory in the next day’s rematch. The M’s women were 83-61 winners to start the season, and then won 93-54 the following day.
In the first game for the VIU men, Kye Kotapski-Tinga led his team with 28 points and six assists. Kai Leighton scored 21 points, Ty Cyr had 20 points and Ekman Sohal had 19. In the rematch, Sohal led the scoring with 22 points and Leighton grabbed 11 rebounds.
