SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Syracuse is set to elect a new mayor for the first time in eight years, with voters deciding between four candidates as early voting begins this weekend.

The candidates vying for the position are Democrat Sharon Owens, Republican Thomas Babylon, and independents Timothy Rudd and Alfonso Davis.

The election comes at a critical time for Syracuse, as the city faces challenges such as public safety, housing and aging infrastructure.

The future leadership of Syracuse is on the line as the city prepares for a significant transition. The new mayor will have to navigate bold opportunities, such as reshaping the community grid and developing a new high school to prepare students for jobs at Micron.

This debate is part of the race to become Syracuse's 55th mayor.
