BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - The Spirit Lake Tribe declared a state of emergency on Wednesday due to the government shutdown’s impending impact on SNAP and LIHEAP benefits.
The tribe plans to supplement LIHEAP benefits and is accepting applications from the 650 residents who receive services within its bounds.
Additionally, the tribe encourages families who rely on SNAP to apply for the Spirit Lake Food Distribution Program for uninterrupted access to food.
It says the WIC and TANF programs should be unaffected, but things are uncertain as the shutdown continues.
