Amazon's settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to start paying out before the end of this year. This stems from a lawsuit from 2023 the government agency brought against Amazon claiming it tricked customers into signing up for Prime subscriptions and then made it difficult to cancel.
The online retailer agreed to the settlement before the antitrust lawsuit could go to trial. The FTC announced on September 25 that the $2.5 billion in fines is the second-highest amount ever levied against a company by the agency.
Just over half of that number, $1.5 billion, is being set aside as restitution for affected Prime subscribers, capped at $51 per person. The other billion is being paid to the government as civil penalties.
