RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Residents in northern Richland County voiced their frustration Monday night over a proposal to expand a landfill off Montgomery Road.

The county held a town hall at the Upper Richland Community Center, where neighbors questioned public works officials and the landfill’s owners about the project.

“It’s not that I don’t trust you, it’s just that I don’t trust you,” one concerned resident said during the meeting.

Richland County Public Works Director Michael Maloney said growth has made the expansion necessary, noting the landfill has seen a 30-percent increase in the amount of waste dropped off over the last year.
