The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has defended the launch of its new website after the rollout of the updated design was met with controversy.

Universal uproar greeted the new website on Wednesday, October 22, with many criticising it as confusing and challenging to navigate.

The bureau's former website was one of the most visited Australian government websites, with more than 2.6 billion users per year.

In a statement on October 23, a spokeswoman said the bureau understood the update changed the experience for the millions of Australians who used its site daily.

"The new website was designed in consultation with the Australian community to make sure it delivers the benefits our customers have told us they want and need," the spokeswoman said.
