CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) - A win in the regional semifinals may not seem overly significant to some, but Tuesday night's victory meant a whole lot to the Danville boys' soccer team.
The Vikings beat Centennial 5-4 in PKs, after a 1-1 tie following regulation and two ten-minute overtime periods. The win boosted the team's record above .500, a mark it hasn't finished a season with since 2016.
It was meaningful for other reasons, too.
Shaw Black, a junior, scored the game-winning goal in penalty kicks. Liam Rome, a senior, made countless saves in regulation before stopping multiple PK attempts and scoring a goal himself in the shootout.
Rome's performance only gets more impressive when considering the fact that he is not the Vikings' usual starting goalkeeper. Danville's typical goalie was
