SPRINGFIELD – The City Council overwhelmingly passed a resolution to try to claw back casino mitigation money, saying the state is reneging on its promise to earmark money from MGM for Western Massachusetts.

The council passed the decree 9-0 Wednesday in a special meeting, held a day before the Senate is scheduled to debate a budget amendment asking to restore roughly $3 million the city has been receiving since 2018.

“In the name of regional equity, I ask that each of my colleagues will consider voting in favor of this amendment and asking our senators to support the restoration of $3 million to Western Massachusetts and the city of Springfield,” said City Councilor Sean Curran, who spearheaded the effort.
