ALTO, MI -- Family of a retired couple say it was miraculous no one died in an explosion and fire that destroyed the couple’s Southeastern Kent County house.

“I don’t know how they did it. I really don’t,” said Donald Rynkowski of the blast and fire that left his parents’ house a pile of rubble.

The blast injured his 80-year-old father, also named Donald Rynkowski, and a propane gas company worker in the cellar. His 79-year-old mother, Darlene Rynkowski, was only shaken up.

The couple had called to report a possible propane leak at their Alto area home, on Freeport Avenue near 100th Street, and the worker was in the cellar to assess the problem, according to the younger Rynkowski.

The explosion rocked the house at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. The source of the ignition was not known.
