HONOLULU (Island News) -- Three opossums were caught by agriculture inspectors at harbors on Oahu and the Big Island throughout the last couple of weeks.

Two of the live opossums, a species invasive to Hawaii, were captured at two separate locations at Honolulu Harbor on Oct. 21. Another opossum was also captured at Hilo Harbor on Sept. 15.

A shipping company reported at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday that an opossum was running round in the container yard at Pier 1 of Honolulu Harbor overnight. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity’s Plant Quarantine Branch agriculture inspectors were able to capture the opossum within an hour by using a pole and a net. The animal was holed up under a shipping container.
