BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Competing rallies over the Equal Rights Amendment on this day in history.
Opposing groups held rallies in Burlington on October 23, 1986.
They came ahead of the election day vote on a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would have enshrined equal rights for women.
“Why do we do that to our children, tell them that they’re not acceptable because they don’t follow strict, rigid role models. We do the same thing to little boys when they’re artistic. It is totally unacceptable in a democratic society,” said one protestor.
“We will do all that is possible in these last few weeks to deal the death blow to the E.R.A. Not only here in Vermont, but throughout our nation. Thank you,” said another protestor.
