Two men have been killed after a plane began to flip as it after took off and landed on a wing before exploding into flames in front of horrified onlookers.

People watching the light aircraft could be overheard screaming before trying to run to safety as the pilot lost control of the plane which ended up almost upside down before hitting the tarmac. The tragedy occurred just before 10am local time yesterday at Paramillo Aerodrome, an airport serving the Venezuelan city of San Cristobal in the country’s mountainous western region.

The victims were identified as pilot Jose Antonio Bortone Terife, 50, and co-pilot Juan Maldonado, 47, as investigators launched a probe into the accident. Initial speculation about the cause focused on a possible tyre explosion although accident investigato
