US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Israel against moves to annex the occupied West Bank, calling a preliminary parliamentary vote to extend Israeli sovereignty over the area and a surge in settler violence a “threat to peace." A bill applying Israeli law to the occupied West Bank- a move tantamount to annexation of land Palestinians seek for a future state- passed its first reading in the Knesset barely a week after US President Donald Trump announced a deal aimed at ending Israel’s two-year offensive in Gaza.

Marco Rubio said, “Annexation moves are potentially threatening for the peace deal. They’re a democracy; they’re going to have their votes and take these positions. But at this time, it’s something that we think might be counterproductive."
