HORSHAM — Calling it a “labor of love” that took 2½ years to culminate, representatives of the Horsham-based Harold F. Pitcairn Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum dedicated a replica of the aircraft used to fly President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957 in honor of Major Gen. Ronald Nelson, the museum’s chairman emeritus.
Nelson, 94, of Lower Moreland Township, attended the Oct. 21 event with his daughter, Suzie Nelson, according to a museum press release.
“That’s an amazing piece of work,” Major Gen. Nelson said to the volunteer restoration team in attendance. “I can’t really thank you enough.”
He was the co-pilot of the Marine One aircraft used to transport President Eisenhower. He and his pilot, the late Col. Virgil Olson, have their names inscribed on the side of the aircraft where they w
