There have been 50 versions of Frankenstein in movies over the years, but the best version only appeared in one film. Mary Shelley created Frankenstein and his Creature in her 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The story was then adapted into silent-era films before becoming a Universal Monster .

The first Universal movies arrived in 1931, with Frankenstein closely following Dracula to start the Universal Monsters franchise. The best Frankenstein movies then flooded out of Hollywood, beginning with Universal, then Hammer Films , before appearing in other adaptations along the way. However, the best version only appeared once.
