The 1-5 Ravens need a comeback to remember if they want to make the playoffs, and the first piece of that long road back might have occurred on Tuesday.Lamar Jackson, the two-time MVP and one of the league's most dynamic players, returned to practice in limited fashion for the Ravens.
Jackson has been out for a month with a hamstring injury, which occurred in a loss to rivals Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes. What the Ravens had hoped would be a brief injury, sidelining him for just a few days to a week, has turned into a saga. The Ravens were directionless without their leader, sitting at the bottom of the AFC standings, only above the winless New York Jets.
While the Ravens are encouraged that he is back on the field, coach John Harbaugh remained cautious in his post-training interview.
"It's hard to put a number on it," Harbaugh said, per a report from NFL.com. "I think it's just part of the process right now. I don't have any shareable injury intelligence for you guys at this point."
Before going down, Jackson was on his way to another season worthy of MVP contention, with 11 overall touchdowns to only one interception, with over a combined 1,000 yards through the air and ground. One of the best playmakers the league has seen in the 21st century, Jackson's improvisation skills were essential to a Ravens offense lost without him. During his absence, the Ravens' offense has sputtered while their below-average defense, also plagued with injuries, hasn't been good enough to keep them in games.
If Jackson were to return, his first game would be against the Chicago Bears (4-3) on Sunday. The Bears are coming off four-straight wins and rallying behind a strong defense and improved play by sophomore quarterback Caleb Williams.
Only one team in NFL history has ever made the playoffs after falling to 1-6, the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals, who won their final seven games to win the now-defunct AFC Central division. A loss to the Bears for the Ravens would all but put a disappointing wrap on their season.
We will keep you updated throughout the week on Jackson's status and all the other injury reports in the world of the NFL.
