Former Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron announced Thursday he will run to be Alabama’s next lieutenant governor as a conservative “outsider,” explaining the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk motivated him to do so.

The Mobile native who played at the University of Alabama under former coach Nick Saban between 2009 and 2013 ended weeks of speculation about whether he would run for elected office when he published a video statement on Facebook Thursday morning, Oct. 23, declaring his candidacy for the office currently held by Will Ainsworth, who is term-limited from running again.
