AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - An elderly lion at Akron Zoo passed away after a battle with chronic kidney disease.
According to a Thursday release from Akron Zoo, the health of the elderly male lion, Tamarr, made a sharp decline, and the zoo decided to euthanize him humanely.
Test results from July showed a progression of chronic kidney disease, which is common in elderly cat species. In October, Tamarr took a step back from the guest-facing habitat, the zoo said.
Tamarr was 20 years old. He was born on Aug. 25, 2005 at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado.
Tamarr joined the Akron Zoo pride in 2007 and quickly became an iconic fan favorite.
Akron Zoo said he was known for his fun personality, loud roars and his beautiful mane.
