SAN JOSE — A man suspected of driving drunk hit and killed a man walking on a freeway connector near downtown San Jose on Wednesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision was reported around 7:20 p.m. at the transition ramp from northbound Highway 87 to northbound Interstate 280, the CHP stated in a news release.

An initial investigation determined that a 52-year-old San Jose man driving a 2021 Hyundai when he lost control of the car and hit a man standing on the right shoulder.

The injured man, believed to be in his early- to mid-40s, died at the scene, the CHP said. His name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
