THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Revenue Department ordered a major reform by increasing the income limit for free land assignment from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh. Revenue Minister K. Rajan directed the amendment to the rules after assessing that the income limit was hindering needy families from getting free land.

The minister said this would fulfil the long-standing need for the people. The annual income limit was fixed at Rs one lakh in 2013. Since the annual income limit of Rs one lakh is very low, considering the standard of living in Kerala, those with an annual income above this could only get land allotment by paying the market price.
