Nevadans who rely on federal food assistance could face benefit delays next month if Congress does not break its budget stalemate, said state officials.
If the federal government shutdown extends beyond October 31, federal funding would be insufficient to cover the cost of Nevada’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for November or beyond, said the Office of the Governor Wednesday.
Every month SNAP provides food assistance to nearly 500,000 Nevadans — 15.5% of the total population, according to Nevada Current . In total, those benefits amount to about $90 million a month in distributions, more than Nevada can feasibly cover with other emergency state funds.
