It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly the jewel tones of fall will become visible on the canopies of Virginia’s trees, but forestry experts believe the prime time to view them is upon us.

“Virginia in the fall is always pretty,” said conservation and education coordinator with Virginia’s Department of Forestry Ellen Powell. “I never tell people there’s not going to be a good fall foliage season, there will always be some trees that stand out.”

She and Virginia Tech Professor of Forest Biology John Seiler said the yellows, reds, oranges and browns of fall sweeps the state, broadly speaking, from west to east and from high to low elevations from early to mid-October to the first weeks of November. Essentially, it follows the cooler areas to the warmer areas.
